This site is run by me, Mike! In some podcast and social media circles, I’m referred to as CapnMikeM, but that’s a name from a bygone era. Mike will do just fine.

I’ve been podcasting and yapping about gaming stuff since the tail end of the Xbox 360/PS3 days. Someone who is better at math can figure out how long ago that was, but in some ways it doesn’t feel all that long, and in other ways it feels like a significant chunk of time.

I’ve hosted shows such as Gamers In Beta and Bad Fodder Figures, and I have co-hosted on shows like The 40 Cast and Gamers Unscripted. I am now a co-host with my good friend Matt on a show called On Second Thought with Mike & Matt. I also just started hosting a show called Retro World Order with Los of The Talking Place and Future Monkeys fame.

When I was hosting the Gamers In Beta podcast, I had an accompanying website, too. I was also writing for other small-time outlets, eager to be entrenched in the gaming landscape. Whether I’ve been podcasting or writing, it’s never been with the idea of making this a career. I have a full-time job, a beautiful family, and all that comes with that kind of lifestyle. Gaming is my escape, my hobby, and something I generally love to share with others, whether that is via audio or print. I have a face for radio, so you might not see me trying out to be the latest YouTuber.

I’ve often toyed with starting a new site, but there was always some excuse or lack of motivation. As I’ve just crossed the 50 year threshold, I’ve realized more than ever that time is finite, and thus I want to do more of what I enjoy. And let me tell you, in 2026, I’ve been having a lot of fun. My love for handhelds has been an incredible journey so far.

I used to consider myself more of an end-user than a tinkerer. When I heard others talk about these retro handhelds, I would joke that I needed to pay someone to set them up for me, since I’d never be able to figure this stuff out. I’m not sure what happened, but one day I committed to watching some videos of the YouTubers we all know in this space. See the Resources page for their links. Now, I’ve accumulated quite the handheld collection, and I want to catalog what I own, the steps I’ve taken along the way, what worked and what didn’t, and try to organize it all in an easy to digest manner.

I’m excited to get going. I have ideas on how I want to present my content, but most of all, this is being done for my enjoyment. I hope others will come across the site, but it’s enough for me to have a place to call my own to collate my thoughts, share my impressions, continue learning and growing my skills, post news stories, and anything else that piques my interest. I’m beholden to no one but me, so what I get out of this depends on what I put in at the end of the day.
