DroidDeck 0.3.2 Adds New Features and Fixes Some Growing Pains

If you’ve been following along, you’ll know that it’s been just three days since my first article on DroidDeck. This won’t be quite the deep dive or no-stone-left-unturned tome I published earlier in the week. Instead, I want to revisit a few pain points from that article that have hopefully been addressed in this new release.

As I previously reported, when I was dancing too close to the sun with my internal storage, I encountered a black screen with a 0 FPS counter. This release potentially addresses one cause of games getting stuck behind Steam’s loading screen. No, I’m not going to fill up my internal storage again to test whether this has been fixed. However, I’ll continue testing DroidDeck to see how closely it can deliver the SteamOS experience we’d expect.

Memory stability has also been improved with this update. A fix for a graphics-memory leak could be relevant to some of my earlier crashes.

I can report that Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved still doesn’t work, despite being listed as SteamOS compatible. Earlier in the week, the game would load to the Bizarre Creations logo before locking up the entire system. Today, the game still doesn’t work, but instead of locking up the device, it crashes back to the Steam menu. Progress or still broken? Perspective is key.

Thanks to the Steam Autumn Sale, I picked up ZPF, a retro-inspired, horizontally scrolling shoot ’em up for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. This one worked great, running at a consistent 60 FPS.

While I don’t expect these early patches to resolve every game-specific problem, it’s exciting to see the frequency of updates. Again, stay patient, appreciate where things are today, and enjoy playing some of your Steam games on Android.

Other notable additions include native Steam sleep and resume with dynamic cloud-save handling and wake movie support, expanded Adreno 6xx compatibility, including the Adreno 650 found in the Retroid Pocket 5, and the ability to use SD cards and external drives as full Steam libraries.
