ARMSX2 celebrated its first anniversary on October 26, 2026, with the release of version 2.9. The latest update introduces several performance improvements, new GPU driver options, and additional features designed to make PS2 emulation more accessible on Android handhelds.
One of the biggest additions is the VU1 Ahead-of-Time Compiler, which aims to improve performance in demanding PlayStation 2 games. It reduces the amount of processing required during gameplay and retains optimizations for future sessions. The feature is enabled by default and should be beneficial for games with complex 3D environments.
Version 2.9 also introduces an optional IOP Thread feature, which distributes some of the emulator’s workload across additional CPU cores. According to the developers, this improves performance by up to 11% in Shadow of the Colossus and approximately 6% in God of War II on the Retroid Pocket Duo. The feature is disabled by default, although ARMSX2 automatically enables it for certain compatible games.
Another addition is Automatic Performance Tuning, which takes some of the guesswork out of configuring the emulator. While a game is running, ARMSX2 monitors performance and experiments with different graphics and CPU settings to identify potential improvements. Only adjustments that improve performance are retained, and the results are saved individually for each game. The feature is disabled by default but can be enabled during initial setup or through the Performance menu. Players can review or reset the changes at any time, while manually adjusting an affected setting disables automatic tuning for that game.
ARMSX2 2.9 also makes it easier to install custom graphics drivers. Players can now download recommended drivers directly through the emulator rather than searching for compatible versions themselves. Supported options include ARMSX2 Turnip for certain Adreno GPUs and MaliSX2 for compatible Mali devices. You can continue using your existing compatible custom drivers, although the ARMSX2-specific versions include optimizations designed for PS2 emulation.
For those who just received their Retroid Pocket Duo, this release gave some additional attention to your shiny new toy, as you can expect improvements to graphics performance, rendering, and overall compatibility.
