DroidDeck 0.4.0 was released yesterday, and it’s a rather substantial update. What started as a way to run Steam on Android handhelds is becoming a more complete PC gaming environment, with additional storefronts, a proper Linux desktop, improved controller support, and performance optimizations.
This is arguably a bigger update than 0.3.0 in terms of functionality. The addition of GOG, Epic Games, and Amazon Games transforms DroidDeck from a primarily Steam-focused application into something closer to a multi-store PC gaming platform for Android.
Of course, the most important question remains: do games actually run better and more reliably? I haven’t played anything with this new release yet, so while the release notes are promising (see below), I’ll need to revisit my usual test games to see how they’re performing.
As I continue to enjoy updates from across the handheld gaming spectrum, there’s one thing I constantly find myself wondering: how are some of these projects releasing updates so frequently?
If we look at DroidDeck, they’re already on version 0.4.0, and the application is evolving at a remarkable pace. For perspective, and not as a direct comparison, ES-DE has averaged roughly three releases per year across 2025 and 2026. Its release frequency has actually slowed somewhat in 2026.
So what’s the secret sauce behind a project like DroidDeck?
Part of that pace can likely be attributed to its open-source development model, which allows multiple contributors to work on different features simultaneously. Rather than building everything from scratch, DroidDeck incorporates existing technologies such as Proton, FEX, and components from WinNative. The team also uses automated GitHub workflows to build and check code changes, helping streamline the development process. The 0.4.0 release alone welcomed ten first-time contributors.
I’ll continue reporting on DroidDeck’s progress and how well these frequent updates translate into improved performance, stability, and compatibility across the Android handhelds I own. I’ll be starting with the handheld of the month, the Odin 3.
