A Vampire Survivors-infused game set in the Warhammer Survivors universe, developed in partnership with poncle, the creators of Vampire Survivors, launching in just a few weeks for $7.99? Where do I sign up for that deal?
For those who can’t wait for November, you’re in luck as Warhammer Survivors is part of the Steam Next Fest happening this week. Some might know Auroch Digital from the Warhammer Boltgun series, where last week they just released Boltgun 2.
Warhammer Survivors isn’t trying to hide its Vampire Survivors roots. With poncle involved in development, the similarities are intentional. The question is whether Auroch Digital can use Warhammer’s characters, weapons, enemy factions, and environments to give the familiar survivors formula an identity of its own.
Vampire Survivors
The Original Phenomenon
Gothic fantasy and supernatural horror
Original playable survivors
Whips, magic, projectiles, and evolved weapons
Monsters, undead, and supernatural creatures
Castles, libraries, forests, and other supernatural locations
Warhammer Survivors
The Grimdark Challenger
Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar
Iconic Warhammer champions
Boltguns, Chainswords, magic, and evolved weapons
Tyranids, Skaven, and other Warhammer factions
Space Hulks, Aqshy, and other Warhammer locations
On paper, Warhammer Survivors looks like a familiar experience, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing. With poncle involved, Auroch Digital isn’t trying to disguise the game’s Vampire Survivors DNA. Instead, it’s betting that the Warhammer universe can bring enough personality to make the experience feel fresh.
Honesty is the best policy, right? I’m gonna come clean and let you know I’ve been having a blast with Steam Next Fest. However, so far, Warhammer Survivors might be my favorite of the bunch. Not simply because it’s similar to Vampire Survivors, but because the juice is worth the squeeze.
I’ll admit, leveling up your Space Marine can be a slog, especially the way I play. At first, your character moves slowly, you’re dying a lot, and it feels like it takes forever to kill certain enemies. But keep your head down, commit to the grind, and over time, you’ll be rewarded.
It’s one of those games where you’re constantly saying, “Just one more run. One more run.” Before you know it, it’s 3:00 AM, and you’re headed to the kitchen for a late-night shredded cheese run. I mean, it can become a problem if you don’t rein it in.
So yeah, I’m loving Warhammer Survivors.
The game really clicked once I rescued my first soldier and watched him join the battle. I’m not entirely sure what triggers it, but more soldiers seem to spawn over time. Before I knew it, I had a platoon of smaller, angry green Space Marines doing the dirty work alongside me.
And finding a grenade in the wild and using it to blow up an entire swarm of Xenos? Pure bliss.
A few hours in, and I feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of this demo. I’ll admit this genre isn’t for everyone, and throw pixel graphics into the mix, and you might lose another chunk of gamers. But this is my jam.
It’s a day-one purchase!
